Douglas Connelly (MDiv and MTh, Grace Theological Seminary) is senior pastor at Davison Missionary Church near Flint, Michigan, after serving twelve years as senior pastor at Parkside Community Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan. A worthwhile personal or group study resource.

I have a shelf full of small group bible studies. Some of them I have used with small groups. Many of them I have used to guide my bible study time. Still others have provided guidance and seeds for thought in developing a sermon series. Of all of the different studies, the largest collection of Bible studies comes from IVP, and of those studies that IVP puts out, the Lifeguide series takes up the most room. I like them because they are simple and straightforward for both personal and group study. I often supplement what is in the book with personal research, but the Lifeguide studies do a good job at guiding people through the topic at hand to be studied.

The Twelve Disciples discusses, if you have not guessed, Jesus' inner circle of followers that are often referred to as the apostles or the disciples. The author does 9 individual studies, and then groups three of the more obscure disciples in one lesson at the end of the series. What I like about the way the study unfolds is that it really focuses in on one Scripture or one event that is central to understanding that particular disciple, their unique gifts and abilities, as well as the struggles that they may have had to deal with. By the time you are done with the study, you will feel like you really know at least 9 of the disciples in a deeper way. In the process, you will also learn baby steps that you might need to take to be stronger in your discipleship journey by learning from the first apostles.

Interesting Bible Study

Part of the LifeGuide Bible Studies series from InterVarsity Press, THE TWELVE DISCIPLES is a ten lesson Bible study guide that examines the lives of Jesus' first twelve apostles. Nine of these are given there are lesson, while the remaining three or covered in the final lesson. Each lesson begins with a detailed passage of scripture. This is followed by a short essay and is followed by a series of group questions. The lesson concludes with a brief section entitled "Now or Later" that provides some more information about the disciple(s) discussed. The very end of the book includes leader's notes that provide more information for leaders of a group. Personally, I'm often fascinated by the lives of the disciples and really enjoyed working through this study; I learned some things about each of the original twelve apostles that I did not know before.

Hilarious and entertaining

Anybody who has ever spent time in a recording studio should read this. And those that haven't spent time in a recording studio should read it just to get a taste of what they DON'T miss.

As a musician and engineer/producer, some of the accounts in the book had me ROFL while other stories just ring VERY true.

And behind all the sarcasm and outrageousness of the (true) tale of a band without any clue and little proficency but too much time and (loaned) money on their hands, there actually is much to be learned about record-making and producing.

Highly remommended!

a very funny look at the reality of recording commercial rock

it can be said that what spinal tap was to rock movies, this book is to rock bands recording in the studio. it's a hilarious look at the process of recording a commercial rock band. it tends to beg the question, how much is real and how much is fiction. and like spinal tap, the answer is that even the most far fetched moments in this recording engineers diary have happened in a recording studio at some time. this book is the diary account of the recording engineer dealing with the band, the producer, the studio, the label, and all that goes along with it. this book is an absolute must for anyone who is interested in music and recording. every studio big and small should have a copy near the mixing board.

mixerman, whoever he is, has done an excellent job of capturing the chaos of the process and putting it into book form. it's personal and fun, unpretentious, and does make you feel as if you are in the room with the band.

this book is much discussed amongst recording engineers because this subject matter hits close to home, and according to the book it is based on the recording process with one particular band, a known band who we've all heard on the radio. this is a taste of what it's like to record a band for a recording label, and it's a very entertaining read.

highly recommended and practically necessary if you are involved in music making or recording or anywhere else in that industry. have a good read and prepare for some hearty laughs.

Hilarious and enlightening! Horrible copy.

I read the Mixerman chronicles about 6 or 7 years ago online and found them insanely entertaining! I never got to finish the story, because to get to the end, you had to buy the book, which I never did....until I recently saw it for the Kindle.

This is a gut-bustingly funny story, told from a professional (and very colorful) audio engineer's perspective. Anyone with a mild interest in the music industry should find it extremely entertaining!

My only gripe, and it's a big one (to me), has to do with the absolutely horrendous quality of the copy. I don't know how the text was entered or scanned to make this version, but there are so many errors it's quite distracting. Small c's become e's, letters are literally chopped in half, words are hyphenated in the middle of a line. Those are just a few examples. For that it loses one star. I know I'm a bit of an obsessive-compulsive Grammar Nazi, but it really does detract from my enjoyment of the book. I don't like to be translating while I read, which is what I basically have to do multiple times on every page.

Perhaps if I rolled a fatty, it wouldn't bug me so much.

A microhistory of a religious conflict

Kaplan has done a wonderful job of detailing a religious war between Catholics and Calvinists in the late 18th century Dutch/German border of Vaals. He gives an engrossing account of how the birth of Mathias to Sara and Hendrick, both belonging to different churches resulted in Cunegonde, Hendrick's sister, trying to kidnap the baby Mathias from a baptism ceremony in a Protestant church - resulting in a full blown religious conflict later on.

Kaplan covers how the conflict between different churches was already there in Europe despite the beginning of Enlightenment and Cunegonde's incident happened in that context.

A page turner, with enough maps from 18th century and photos of churches involved, making it a one of a kind.

A Microhistory of Religious Conflict

Whole nations used to go to war because they considered their opponents to be of the wrong branch of Christianity. Then came the Enlightenment and tolerance, and that sort of nonsense stopped in the eighteenth century, or that’s how the story goes. Tolerance wasn’t just a way of getting along; Voltaire and Rousseau and others emphasized that it was a virtue that Christians ought to practice and it was the way a civil society ought to operate. Of course, tolerance didn’t just happen all at once, all over the place. In 1762, there was a cycle of religious violence in the village of Vaals, Catholic vs Protestant, and its story had not been fully told until now. Benjamin J. Kaplan, a professor of Dutch history at University College London, came across a huge misfiled dossier when he was searching the electronic records of the Dutch National Archive in The Hague. It was his dream of finding buried treasure fulfilled. He has from these files and other archives brought forth _Cunegonde’s Kidnapping: A Story of Religious Conflict in the Age of Enlightenment_ (Yale University Press), a surprising and comprehensive history of an isolated event (I learn here that this is called a microhistory) that throws light on the progress of the Enlightenment or lack thereof, and on human nature itself.

Because there was a mix of Catholics and Protestants in the border village of Valls, and they had business and social dealings with each other, there were friendships and even marriages between those of different faiths. And so it was that Sara Maria Erffens, a member of the Reformed Church, married Hendrick Mommers, a poor Catholic cloth shearer, in 1761. To get their marriage official, Hendrick and Sara had made different promises about their offspring, and counter-promises, but to Sara’s church went the infant son born on 13 April 1762. This seems to have been agreeable to both Hendrick and Sara, but Catholics generally didn’t like it. In fact, the Catholic priest of Vaals, Johannes Wilhelmus Bosten, may have suggested to Cunegonde, sister of Hendrick, that she was to bring the baby to him for a Catholic baptism. Whether he exerted such influence or not upon Cunegonde, who everyone agreed was a simpleton, was to be the focus of legal proceedings that went on for years after Cunegonde took action. She went to the Protestant church where the Baptism was being held, and grabbed for the baby, not once, but twice. This was a sacrilegious disruption of a sacrament, and she was arrested. Then Catholic youths stormed the tavern serving as her jail, and antagonism between Catholics and Protestants heated up. Although it wasn’t much of a war; there were riots (one person died), threats, and reprisals. Cunegonde and Bosten were put in jail for years before their trials, and then both were convicted.

Kaplan says that by the time of the sentencing, elite Protestants may have been influenced by thinkers like Rousseau and Voltaire, and that there was a feeling of sympathy toward the accused. This might not have caused any change of feeling within the populace. What really changed that was that the French eventually took over the area that had been full of religious squabbling, and declared that Protestants and Catholics were equal citizens. One can guess there was still prejudice even then, but Kaplan wisely points out that there were countless examples of members of the two religions getting along well together; this story only got started, after all, because of a Catholic and a Protestant who overcame obstacles to getting married. “Ordinarily, though,” he writes, “when Catholics and Protestants got along with one another, it left no documentary trace. The problem is a general one for historical inquiry: while conflict echoes loudly in the historical record, peace does not.” The Enlightenment did eventually come to Vaals; we have our Catholic / Protestant prejudices still but no longer wars between the camps. Religious violations of Enlightenment principles are coming from another direction these days, making the strife in this absorbing story seem almost quaint.

Beckett publications have the most sought after price guides in the hobby of Baseball. I've collected sports cards since 1972, and Beckett is used by more people than any other guide in the world. As for this book, you're getting a guide with over 1,000 pages of informative prices for some of todays (and yesterday's) hottest sets. Sets from as far back as 1887 to 2002. What I've always admired about Beckett guides is how extensive their listings are. Please note, while Beckett and other guides attempt to give you the most extensive coverage of the Baseball card market, it's virtually impossible to list every single set in existence. So if you get a guide and you do NOT see your card or set listed, it doesnt mean it isn't worth anything, it just means that your particular card or set may not be known of in the open market, or that it's not one of the most traded cards on the market.
The guide is set up so that the brand names are listed in alphabetical order, there's a section on the history of baseball cards, a guide to help you determine the condition of your cards (and folks, please know ahead of time, it's not kosher to put rubber bands around your collection) tips on how to Sell them, a Terminology section, a small section on how to collect, where to find them and how to preserve them. Each of the sets are broken down to list each single card of the set. You may find production numbers in the listing, as well as any known error cards or other variations. About the Author
Rita Kogler Carver is currently the executive artistic director of DragonFly Performing Arts, Inc. and a managing member of BearFly Designs, LLC. She has worked professionally as a theatrically trained designer for almost 20 years, and as an Associate Lighting Designer for Broadway Theatre, Regional Theatre, Dance and Opera. Ms. Carver won an Emmy Award for her Lighting Design work on the "2000 Sydney Olympics." She also won an Emmy nomination for the "Montel Williams Show," as well as a Silver Axiem Award for "Elmo's World."

Fun Thinking!

What a wonderful book!
I thoroughly enjoyed it - great fun and really gets your mind working.
It has filled in all those gaps which would otherwise just have been wasted -bus, tube, waiting in bar for friends. Its great to dip in and out of.
Only one problem - I am obviously going to have finished it well before Christmas! It would have been invaluable to stop the vegetation when just sitting around in the family scene. Fancy doing a sequel, Peter?

I absolutely love Peter Cave the king of philosophical paradoxes (at least to me). I first came to know about him through podcasts on philosophy and he is so funny. This book mirrors his sense of humor and natural wit. It feels like you are having a conversation with him over a glass of really good wine.
