We concentrate here on painters such as Rogier van der Weyden (1400-1464), Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441, commonly described as the founder of modern oil painting), Gerard David (c. 1460-1523), Hugo van der Goes (1440-1482), Hans Memling (1433-1494), Joos van Cleve (c. 1485-1540), Jan Gossaert, also called Mabuse (c. 1475/8-1532), Geertgen tot Sint Jans (fl. late 15th 1485/ 95), Quentin Massys (c. 1465-1530), Joachim Patinir (c. 1485-1524), Dieric Bouts (c. 1415-1475), Petrus Christus (fl. 1442-1473) and Bernard van Orley (c. 1488-1541). One of the most celebrated aspects of Early Netherlandish or Flemish painting is its heartfelt, intense religious emotion. It is this aspect that interests us in this book. The new aesthetic vision of Early Netherlandish art was later applied to still life paintings, satires, landscapes, and portraits, but it is the religious works with which we are concentrating on here. Michelangelo's famous statement about Early Netherlandish art pinpoints the depth of devout feeling found in so much of Northern European art: Flemish painting will, generally speaking, please the devout better than any painting in Italy, which will never cause him to shed a tear, whereas that of Flanders will cause him to shed many... The new vision of Northern European painting which flourished in the 15th century was a combination of a new aesthetic approach to reality, and an intensifying of religious fervour. The new vision aimed at sculptural accuracy, a naturalistic use of lighting, and three-dimensionality. Mixed with the new use of oil paint, the new vision gave the art of Philip the Good's reign a special flavour and style well suited to the circumscription of devout religious truths. The new painting inherited its jewel-like brilliancy partly because many painters were trained as goldsmiths. This skilled handling of metalwork and miniature illustration shows in Early Netherlandish art. All Early Netherlandish paintings were made on wood panels, and painted from light to dark in thin glazes. It is partly this subtle glazing which gives Early Netherlandish painting its glorious luminescence. The Early Netherlandish artists exploited the effects of different hues and thicknesses of glazes of oil paint, controlling how the glazes reflected light. Pediatric pocketcard set

The company was very timely in sending out the card but the card contained incorrect information as set out by current American Heart Association standards. The company had been aware of the problem and stated they were actively working to correct the card but the BLS information went beyond being incorrect even if you considered the last roll out of the AHA BLS standards and the NRP standards from the American Assoc Association of Pediatrics. The card does look like it contains some very useful and concise information but I have not checked the contents for accuracy.

Very good card

This card is a really good resource. I am a pediatric resident and carry this card with me at all times. I find it really useful for quick reference for normal heart rates and blood pressures with age variations and also for milestones. it also has a baby Glasgow coma scale and management of emergencies.
Many of my colleagues seing this card with me bought one for themselves.

A Masterful Portrait of a Tumultuous Time

For a book that eventually got made into a Steve McQueen movie I was very surprised by the depth of this book.

McKenna does an excellent job of portraying China in transition, told from the points of view of the sailors on the USS San Pablo and from the missionaries at China Light, people whose world is literally shattered. The first part of the book focuses on the protagonist, Jake Holman, as he learns to adjust to life onboard the tiny San Pablo after having transferred from the Pacific Fleet. Everything is going to be perfect, he is going to have his own engine, his own engine room and be able to run it the way he wants to. Except that's not how it is on the San Pablo - most of the engineering work is done by coolies, cheap contract laborers who make their living by skimming off the ship's supplies. Coolies cook, clean, iron uniforms, swab the decks, maintain the engine and do all of the menial work leaving the crew to drill, and drill and drill and drill. The paper tiger of the San Pablo's small crew and it's three pound cannon is the only force guarding American interests - missionaries, factories, mines and more, this far up the Yangtze and appearances have to be maintained no matter how ultimately ineffective the reality may be.

By the second part of the book the Chinese have seen through it. The armies of Chiang Kai-Shek marching under the "gearwheel" flag of the Kuomintang are marching north towards the Yangtze while Bolshevist forces are working and agitating along the northern banks of the river. At first the coolies start skimming more and more off the top, and then they abandon the ship, running overboard and swimming towards a blockade of sampans that have started to surround and harass the ship every day. China is awakening to a sense of self-identity that had been suppressed for a very long time and the men of the San Pablo are despised relics of the old China, an abused and tortured China with no sense of pride or self-worth.

Perhaps one of the most difficult things for the crew to deal with is the fact that the people they are supposed to be protecting, largely missionaries, are full supporters of the Kuomintang. When the San Pablo is told to stand back and only defend American lives, not American property, it is because of the missionaries who have gone home and lobbied for American non-involvement in China. The reader feels the frustration, anger and demoralization of the crew as they are curtailed repeatedly from executing what is supposed to be their primary purpose - protection of American interests. The Chinese have also learned how to make paper tigers of their own from their Russian advisors and waste no time in churning out propaganda and sometimes outright lies about the San Pablo and their men. There is no place for the men of the San Pablo towards the end of the book - their country has for all intents and purposes abandoned them and there is no place in this new, alien China they find themselves in.

One last thing I will mention is that that most readers will be sent running for a dictionary of mechanical engineering by about fifteen pages in. I learned more about steam and marine engines reading this book than I ever expected to.

Not as good as I once thought it was -- but, then again, what is?

I read this the year it came out. Long, long ago. It's a well written interesting book, but it's from so long ago most people under the age of 60 won't have a clue. But it's still good.

An unknown facet of the US Navy comes to light and life.

The Sand Pebbles is the story of a small ship, on a small river deep in the heart of China. Unknown by most of the rest of the world but home to the crew of the ship. McKenna, a former Asiatic Fleet Sailor, describes life in the river gunboats of the 1920s with an accuracy and authenticity that is amazing. I could almost feel the heat of the engines and the aromas from the galley.
The book is a study of men in the Navy. They are far from the public eye, doing a job deemed essential by someone in Washington. They are essentially feared by the Chinese and despised by the American missionaries they come into contact with. It must have been a brutal emotional duty to carry out. Yet many men loved it. They spent their careers on the rivers and retired there when their time was up in the Navy.
Jake Holman, the central figure, is not better or worse than most other Sailors of that time. His motivation for joining the Navy were "...Army, Navy or reform school..." and so into the Navy he went. He is a competent machinest mate but has few real people skills. He is a loner on the outskirts of the Navy world. He has bounced from ship to ship and has now reached the end of the line. But even Holman makes friends in the ship as he tries to adapt to his surroundings.
It is an interesting look at the gunboat navy. The crew did military duties and drills but the day to day ship's husbandry were done by Chinese men. Is it any wonder the crew loved China duty once they got there.
One might say that the conclusion of the book is confusing and leaves you feeling troubled. Well it fits with the mission of the gunboat sailors and I think is perfect. Antiimperialists may condem the book and the subject but it was a real part of the American Navy and deserves to be remembered and respected.

About the Author
Gareth Jones is a Professor of Management in the Lowry Mays College and Graduate School of Business at Texas A&M University. He received both his BA and PhD from the University of Lancaster, UK

Georgina Palffy worked as a travel editor for Cadogan Guides, a political and media analyst for an intelligence organization, a foreign affairs journalist at the "Guardian" and D"aily Telegraph" newspapers, and an art reviewer for a London listings magazine. She has also lived and worked in Rome for several years. Since moving to New Zealand in 2002, she and her family have been living 100 yards from the beach in Napier, art deco capital of Hawke's Bay. Married to a New Zealander, she didn't really want to come to the southern hemisphere in the first place, but has been converted to the easygoing charms of life on a South Pacific island.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!!!

Like all DK books, The Religions Book is an excellent resource. Beautiful, formatted well, easy to read. Fascinating subjects broken down into understandable overviews and reflections. You cannot go wrong when you buy a DK Publishing book. They are always written by reputable scholars, full of incredible illustrations or pictures, and a pure joy to read. You rarely even realize you are LEARNING! This book is no different. Buy it.

BUT . . . DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION. I have never seen a worse Kindle book. Whoever formatted this book for Kindle should be sent back to school (or prison?). You cannot read it on Kindle. You cannot read it on the PC. It pops up in a little box of tiny text that you cannot even zoom in comfortably to read! You cannot highlight. Just a terrible experience.

It really is not fair that an awesome book like this gets its reviews skewed because whoever was in charge of the Kindle version RUINED it.

I own a dozen or more DK books and treasure them all. The Kindle version is garbage, but the book itself is nearly perfect.

Kindle version is horrible

While the content of the book is great, the Kindle formatting is terrible.
It is completely inconsistent with every other Kindle book I have purchased.
Supposedly you can zoom to enlarge text and double tap to see all sidebars.
None of those features work.
Double tapping actually seems to randomly jump you back and forth between different sections of the book.
It seems that one other book in this series has formatting problems as pointed out on the kindle order page.
All of the DK Publishing books in this series need to be re-assessed as to readability.

LOVE

I truly love this kind of book. I have the 'Philosophy' and 'Psychology' book both by the same author (DK Publishing). This book takes each major religion and really breaks it down to its essential beliefs. This book is also an easy read and almost a short story format. People who love to learn but do not have the time to read a whole book would really benefit from books like this by DK. This book in particular really answered a lot of questions I have had on other religions without being bias. It is so difficult these days to find a book on religions that is not bias and to me that's yet another reason to love DK publishing. Something else that this book covered which I really appreciated was it went into the different kinds of Christians.

This book is theology so there is interpenetration and points of view which the reader must decide on. This book is a great resource to have for any questions you may have on religion. If you are looking for a book that has all of the major religions in the world with clear information that is not bias then look no further.

First Impression.

Just started into this book so haven't finished playing thru it yet. But I will give you my first impression based on what I have completed thus far. The tablature seams accurate so far to the CD that comes with it. The coaching between sections does add value and helped with the learning curve. I especially like the coaching. This book is not for "method" beginners. Although by going through the tabs one could mimic what is happening on each track. I would recommend this book for those who are learning fretboard theory (ie Major scale, Minor scale, Pentatonic Scales,and Blues scales, modals) this book would make a great addition to your lesson plan. With this book you can see these scales applied masterfully. It does not have play thru songs like a play along book might. This book breaks up songs into smaller sections and gives tips on things like hand postioning, techique etc. So far I am enjoying this book.

I live in Charlotte, NC. An article in the local newspaper (The Charlotte Observer) alerted me to the fact that we had a Shakespeare expert in our very midst -- a faculty member at UNCC! Though not Hartley's high quality expert, I do work in Shakespeare. So I was very interested in hearing what he had to say about altering the texts of the Bard's plays. I appreciate his middle-of-the-road position and I think Doctor Hartley states it clearly and interestingly. Some of the background on the dramaturg was a bit dry and maybe a little too extensive. I attribute that reaction to the fact that I was more interested in his take(s) on "translations."

Watch out for the quiet ones ...hot damn

Well my friends I have to tell you I am a huge fan of Charlie Richards and I always expect 3 things from her books
1-Interesting characters
2-Interesting situations and
3-Interesting hot sexy love
And this author never has let me down. Collins Desoto introduction to the paranormal world was to say the least shocking and unexpected. To have him be mated to a paranormal is just plain fun. The lucky man to get his hands on this detective is the quiet Tristan who well surprised me on how down right sexy and bold he can be what a charmer ...yum. Trust me when I say you will not regret giving your time to this Hot-Blooded Alligator.

While I do enjoy the ongoing story arc, it always feel like most of the story occurs off page. Cliff hangers are fine, expected even in this series; just wish that in the next installment more detail is given in resolving the cliffhanger than just a few sentences. Definitely not stand alone.

It's lonely deep in the very back of the closet

I waited a while for the release of the Gator's story. He is my first encounter with an Alligator shifter. Every since I first met him in one of the earlier books in the series I've been eager to read his story. Tristan has led such a sad life. From being sent away from his Alligator family at a young age to the terrible life he lived during the many years he was held captive in Bud Wallice's slideshow. Coming to live at the Gargoyles compound was his first chance to lead a normal adult shifter's life.

But Tristan tired of all the gawkers and cruelty wanted...needed time to heal and relax in his new "safe" environment. It meant being able to lie out in the sun, swim leisurely in his Alligator form, and be left alone in an isolated part of the estate. Some worried about his isolation from everyone others recognized it was what he needed. Still when an opportunity came to involve him with helping round up the people responsible for his captivity he brought what came to be known as his patented patient interrogation style.

The last thing he expected when the police detective Collin DeSoto went to the Gargoyle compound was to not only find the missing man he was searching for, but be fiercely attracted to the gorgeous albino Alligator he meets for the first time. Deeply closeted Detective DeSoto has always been very circumspect in his male/male encounters. He and his family are very close, gathering together regularly, so Collin hears nasty homophobic comments frequently. He suffers silently even enduring the many women his family invites to join them since they are determined to see him marry.

Tristan recognizes Collin immediately as his mate and sets out to make him his. Everyone on the estate is shocked by his behavior because of his usually reserved personality. How he handles his mate's family remains to be seen? How Collin handles the Gargoyles imprisoning people and interfering with his investigation is the least of his problems. How he handles his interfering homophobic family and keep them from hurting the very special man/Alligator he grown to care for is what concerns him the most?
