Solid Principles, but needs a little more information

I thoroughly enjoyed this book on voice. In fact, I've read at least a dozen books on singing in the past year and only cared for a few. This was one of them. This book has solid principles that work. The main focus is on breath support, which should be the foundation of all singing. I know of many methods that kind of throw breathing and support out the door, thinking they'll "just happen". That is such a mistake. This is the first book I've seen in awhile to address this subject correctly.

For the breath technique alone, the book is well worth the price. But, I also loved the part where the author discussed the health benefits of singing and thought it was quite interesting to know

It was a fun, easy, quick read and would be good for kids because of the author's writing style and multiple refer4ences to what he calls the "Vocal Power Team" to be used by all "Vocal Warriors". I would have given the book a 5 star but there were a few things I thought were lacking:

* The section on vibrato just didn't explain it well to me. I understand vibrato and the principles were there, but I am hoping the author expands on it and explains a little deeper how it can be developed instead of just leading towards it will naturally happen. Yes it should naturally happen but some people need more guidance.

* He discusses some common terms like "sing from the diaphragm", "sing in your high voice", "Open up the throat", which was very nice but a few of the points I didn't totally agree with.

* I understand he offers a vocal exercise MP3 from his site as he mentions in his book and is fine to promote your own products within the context of your work, but I felt his main exercises in the book lacked guidance without an audio track. He should consider creating a few mp3s that come free with his book that can be downloaded from his site. That would help the student to truly understand what he's aiming for.

All in all, a good read that I will recommend to my friends and students

Illustrated with over 800 photographs and nearly 800 pages long, this hard cover book is one of the finest ever printed on pigeons. Also has chapters on care, color breeding, and history with humans. A must for every pigeon owner's library.

A GREAT read with 800-plus color photos

If you love pigeons you are going to love this book. It not only has terrific photos, but it has a wealth of information about each breed and much about the different varieties within the breeds.
I also thoroughly enjoyed Wendell Levi's other two classics, THE PIGEON, and MAKING PIGEONS PAY.
No pigeon fancier will be without ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIGEON BREEDS. Nor will any commercial pigeon raiser will be without THE PIGEON.
Needless to say, those of you who may wish to learn about squab raising will certainly find no equal to MAKING PIGEONS PAY.

A tribute to a facinating hobby.

A beautiful book with hundreds of color pictures representing pigeons from around the world. The variety in terms of colors, patterns and shapes is absolutely amazing! No other book that I know of comes even close in terms of completness. For each race there is a section on origin, description, size, colors and other comments. For a newcomer to this hobby it's a perfect way to choose a race of pigeon to raise either for flying or for expositions.

It may also be that some of the races presented have completely died out and therefore this book has value as an historical reference for what once was but has been lost.

Leidra Lawson, the controversial author of Sugar Daddy 101-What You Need to Know if You Want to be a Sugar Baby, is a professional model, businesswoman and of course a sugar baby diva. She currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia after having lived in Europe for several years. Lawson has been featured nationally in newspapers and been in numerous fashion shows.

She has a zest and passion for life, which has led to many exciting adventures. Lawson has traveled extensively all over the world, playing with the rich and famous at exclusive resorts and sporting events. It is within these circles that she met sugar daddies and sugar babies alike.

Lawson enjoys helping people and has counseled underprivileged women on how to save money and make good investments. She loves helping other women achieve their goals in life. In fact, a young grad student who Lawson was giving investment advice to, suggested that she should write Sugar Daddy 101. This advice session led to an impromptu "sugar baby" lesson, which led to the young woman meeting a sugar daddy who gave her the operating capital for a business that turned out to be very successful.

Lawson started writing at an early age and writes poetry and short stories. She is currently working on a second book featuring more of her sugar baby adventures and will include stories from sugar daddies.

A lil bit sinful

I found this book to be very entertaining and had some very useful tips on how to 'scoop' an man, a practise that most women are into in one form or another regardless of whether they or the man are rich or not. I have learnt that there are 'better' ways to get my boyfriend/fiance to buy me things /give me money for something that just outright throwing a tantrum and demanding it...he even advised me that i should 'learn' more subtle techniques to get him to sponsor my clothing, hairdresser appointments etc. Funny thing tho, he is actually a little bit younger than me (a sugar toyboy? or am i sugar cradle snatcher:)) but he makes more money than me and is happy to make ME happy which works out great for both of us as i have told him that i love to play Rich Man Boss and Trophy Wife.

This book is also great for general self improvement and learning how to acquire class and taste and style or at least the importance of such to attain a higher level of lifestyle.

The only thing I didn't approve of was that it did encourage women especially young women, to poach on other women's husbands. I believe that such as practise does not lead to long term happiness because women do have a tendency to become emotionally attached and dependant on the man they are sleeping with / dating and there are all too many women who are stuck in dead end relationships with men who they hope will leave their wife to marry them but never do. Unless, you are like Gabi Solis from Desperate Housewives and are able to compartmentalise your feelings whilst having a fling or affair, it would say that being with a man just for the gifts and cash is only a short term means to a long term end.

I have read 'How to marry the rich' by Ginie Polo Sayles and found the advice to be far more practical for a woman whose aim is to marry up and therefore secure her financial position through a legal marriage.

Simple Statistics

If you are looking for a statistics book that explains things in a simple and elementary way, this book is for you! Additionally, the problems are straightforward. However, it requires that you know calculus I for some of the problems. It also has computer applications that you can practice. The only drawback is that the probability chapter is skimpy. You may want to supplement your knowledge of probability with another book, since statistics requires that you know probability first.

I think this book is very good for grasping the concepts and intuition behind the mathematical formalisms. Perhaps it should be used with another more theoretical book (Meyer, for instance). It is useful not only for engineering students.

This book is very hard to read. The delineation between sections is difficult to determine. Referencing is almost impossible. The samples problems are confusing and often obtuse. Many explanations are unclear as presented.

Proffering an alternative in terms of literary historiography; this book supports a methodological approach that considers literary narratives which occur in the margins of dominant discourses, and indeed promote non-discursivity, as the main writers of Persian modernist fiction. It is an essential resource for scholars and researchers interested in Persian and comparative literature, as well as Middle Eastern Studies more broadly.

About the Author

Mohammad Mehdi Khorrami is Professor of Persian language and literature at New York University. His research is focused on the literary characteristics of contemporary Persian fiction and classical Persian poetry. He has authored, translated and co-edited numerous books and articles. Among his book-length publications are Modern Reflections of Classical Traditions in Persian Fiction, and Sohrab’s Wars: Counter Discourses of Contemporary Persian Fiction, which is a translated and edited collection of short stories; the co-edited and co-translated A Feast in the Mirror: A Collections of Short Stories by Iranian Women. He is the founder of The Association for the Study of Persian Literature (www.persian-literature.org)

Solid book ... read the title!

This is a solid book that covers exactly what the title promises, in exactly the way the title implies.

Some buyers will read the subtitle and expect this book to be a comprehensive guide to making short animated films. Others will expect a complete guide to using Blender for creating animation. You get a little of both in this book, and that is a good thing. It's not a book about Blender, or about making short films, but a book about the process of using Blender to make short films. In that subtle distinction lies the basis for one of the most useful books on my sagging, overloaded Blender shelf.

Chapter by chapter, author Roland Hess walks the reader through the creation process of his own short film, "The Snowmen." Starting with a rough story idea, he proceeds through scripting, storyboarding, dialogue, music, audio, animatics, rendering, editing, compositing, etc. While this is interesting, hundreds of other books on filmmaking cover the same subjects, most of them in more depth.

Where this book shines is in linking the generic concepts to the particulars of using Blender. (It's a book on Blender production, remember?) While any book on digital filmmaking will cover making animatics, for example, this one goes into detail on making OGL previews from Blender's 3D viewport and combining them with stills and audio in the Sequence Editor. The expected checklist of render cheats and gotchas is specifically tailored to the UI and terminology of Blender 2.5/2.6. There's even coverage of the Grease Pencil tool as an animator's aid.

"Blender Production" makes the jump from "good" to "essential" in the chapter on project setup and file management. Hess is a fanatic about organization, and once you've spent a few minutes boggling over the sheer amount of data required to make a few seconds of "The Snowmen," you will be too. His project layout is straightforward, logical, and clearly explained in every detail. Likewise well-explained is the workflow that accompanies it. If you follow along with the downloadable project files (you ARE following along, aren't you?), you'll know exactly how to create assets, store them, and share them with a team without breaking a link or dropping a polygon. There are other guides to project management in Blender, but I've found none that are simpler, clearer, and better suited to the needs of a single-person or small-team project.

If you're in the market for a more general book about Blender's movie making tools, pick up Tony Mullen's "Blender Studio Projects: Digital Movie Making." Between that book and this one, you'll have everything you need to tackle a short film in Blender except time, imagination, and persistence. You'll have to supply those things on your own. :-)

Ane excellent book for the more advanced Blender user

For a relatively small program, Blender is far from lightweight. In fact, it incorporates almost an entire video production suite and this is the first book I've seen that addresses Blender from the point of view of video and animation workflow. There are other resources out there that address rigging, sculpting, polygon flow, video editing and compositing and so forth, but what this book does spectacularly well is guide you through the planning and execution of a small animation: the sort of thing anybody might try to do, but which so often fails because of an incomplete grasp of the complexity of the process.

In a series of chapters beginning with an overview of the whole project, Hess lays out very clearly and from obvious experience how to solve problems before they occur. Chapters on "Story", "Organization", and "Managing Animation At The Project Level" I found particularly helpful, dealing with first--how to not bite off more than you can chew, second--how to set up files and naming conventions to keep track of the surprisingly large amount of stuff, and third--how to not go mad from keeping track of where you are in the process.

In sum, the book is very much like having an experienced producer at your back--not giving you too much guidance on the art but being really, really helpful about getting the thing done.

While this model works well in some, mostly "start-up" congregations, it has been a dismal failure in traditional, established churches, many of which have had to abandon their seeker services.

Robert Webber here proposes an alternative: a model of worship that emphasizes the fact that those who come to worship are at very different points in their spiritual lives. Rather than ignore these differences or gear all of worship to those already established in the faith, he argues that churches should openly recognize the stages of faith through which their members are passing, and structure their worship and ministry to celebrate those stages, openly encouraging Christians to move from spiritual infancy to maturity in Christ.

Packed with Inspiring Information

The late Dr. Webber is passionate about living and sharing faith in Jesus Christ. This is a very well thought out book from start to finish. A bit deep for an average reader, but one who is a serious scholar or just simply passionate for a renewal of faith and evangelization will find it fascinating, challenging, and inspiring.

Evangelism for a new age

Webber has outlined an evangelism for a new age. We live in a post-modern world where a majority of the people have little or no contact with the Church.
Evangelism in this age is similar to that of the first two centuries of the Christian faith. Instead of handing out tracks, we bring them into the church by forming relationships with them, teaching them what worship is, and by nurturing them in the faith.
This is an excellent book and one that thoughtful missionaries in our culture will turn to again and again.
Along with his book Ancient-Future Faith and the Younger Evangelicals, Webber has set us an agenda and a method.
The faith is taught not caught. The early Christians taught new comers the faith before they made them full members in the community. In our world we make them full members and leave them ignorant far too often.

Much to consider here. Most definitely worth the read.

I am probably not in a great majority, but I found this proposal for a model of discipleship by Robert Webber stimulating and refreshing. What is so refreshing (to me) is that it does not promote a new or revolutionary approach and it certainly does not attempt to be "relevant" to a contemporary culture. Although the back cover of Journey to Jesus claims this approach to worship, evangelism, and nurture mission is "cutting edge," Webber reaches back to Christianity's ancient roots in order to define and develop his model. This ancient approach is precisely why I am likely in a small group that actually appreciates and will promote this model for spiritual formation.

What does this model of evangelism look like?

Webber's description (pg. 10) follows: "First, the content is grounded in the biblical and historical message of salvation through the person and work of Jesus Christ. Second, the style has the flexibility to be integrated into any type of setting. Third, the structure is characterized by four stages of development and three passage rites which mark the seeker's journey from conversion to a period of discipleship to a time for equipping the believer for spiritual warfare, finally, to incorporation into active church membership."

Webber goes on to describe the four stages or phases in detail. Phase one deals with evangelizing the seeker aka unchurched. Phase two discusses how to disciple the hearer aka new believer. Phase three looks at equipping the kneeler aka maturing believer, and phase four focuses on the process of incorporating the faithful aka new member into the church. Each of the phases transitions to the next with a rite of conversion.

I very much appreciate the style the book was written. It's obvious that Webber (deceased) writes from the heart of an educator. The writing is clear, there are multiple illustrations, and there are extensive notes and additional resource recommendations throughout. In addition, Webber has included a leader's guide to help teach this development model or to serve as a discussion starter if reading the book in a group.

As a pastor who has been involved in Christian education and discipleship methods for many years, I think there is much to be gleaned from Webber's observations and proposal. I'm not sure that I would use the method as a blueprint, but I'm certain it could function as a guide. I believe there are principles worth considering in Journey to Jesus that might stimulate our thinking about some of the ways we have approached mentoring others in the ways of Jesus Christ. The book is worth reading for this reason alone.
