Much better than the kumon addition book

This book is much better than the kumon: addition book and the Kumon:simple addition book. Just skip those two books in the series, and just buy this one. In this book, in each two pay layout, the problems are divided into 4 sections. If the child is older, they could do all 4 sections. The first two sections are 2 pt. per problem. The 3rd and 4th section are 3 pts per problem. The total is 100 pts. For a younger child, the pts can be skipped, but for my 2nd grader that needs to work on his basic addition facts, he likes me to time him and give him a score. My son did not like the Kumon:simple addition and kumon: addition book, and he never wanted to work on them during kindergarten or 1st grade. Seeing a whole page full of problems was too daunting of a task. Breaking up the problems into 4 sections is better, because it is less scary to the child. I set the timer for 5 minutes, but ideally I want him to finish between 2 - 3 minutes. This is a 1st grade book, and he is a 2nd grader. We are working on speed now. By being able to break up the pages by half or 1/4, I can adjust the amount of problems assigned to keep him within our target goal. Or I could use the first section for learning the material, and then the other sections for timed work. Anyway, this Kumon book is worth the money.

Complete breakdown of the book.

This does not deserve the 1-star ratings a few have given it. In order to enjoy higher levels of math, you need a rock solid foundation of basic skills. That requires practice and lots of repetition, to the brink of boredom (hopefully not too far over the brink). If your child knows some of this book already, thank yourself or your teacher or both, please don't yell at the book. Hands down, this was the best book for my child out of all of the ones we've used so far.

This is great for beginning kindergartners, but you'll likely spend additional time reworking the handwriting sections like we did. Think of it as real lessons (with much help and guidance from yourself) that will eventually transition into unguided practice somewhere around the middle of the book. And you should be patient and not try to get through the book quickly. For a first grader, I suspect this is probably supplementary practice material and will require little to no guidance from parents, but I don't really know because she isn't in that grade yet. I wouldn't skip the handwriting section unless you absolutely know they don't need it. A teacher has around 30 kids and may watch your child form their numbers for only minutes out of the year, if even that. Nothing wrong with spending an hour or two of your time to make sure they have a lifelong skill taken care of.

I'm going to break down the sections so you can understand how I used it. To be clear, if my child's success was due mainly to some innate ability, then I wouldn't bother reviewing the book, but the reality is the book's organization and approach deserves a ton of the credit. I am convinced that the majority of children will have similar experiences as long as they are moving at their own pace and get the guidance they need. One or two sessions a week was a good pace for us because she has nightly homework, music lessons, gymnastics, ... you know the drill. Time off to play is critical. Approximately 15-30 minutes per chunk, regardless if that was half a lesson or several lessons. If it's more towards half a lesson, then I would stay close to 15 minutes so they don't become overwhelmed or exhausted from the difficulty of it. If they are flying through the stuff, let them revel in it until they start to lose their concentration. That's around 30 minutes right now for my kid. I may sound like a slave driver because of how detailed I am with all of it. The way it actually works, though, is hand holding through completely new concepts and lots of patience and praise. If they don't get it, don't move on, try another day using a different approach. For concepts already understood, I let her do it herself and just hung around doing something else quietly in the room. If she got frustrated, I would help talk her out of the frustration and to refocus and not be so upset that something is hard. If she couldn't drop the frustration, I turned it into a lesson on one or two topics that needed to be gone over the most and then ended the session for the day, not worrying about finishing the page. Most of the true emphasis was on pattern finding; the actual addition just takes care of itself in this book.

The first lessons are tracing large numbers, following the arrows so that you are forming them properly. It immediately starts to shrink the box size over the next several lessons and ends with the appropriate writing size for 1st grade. It also introduces the counting dot groups that you see on all standardized tests. There is a smooth transition into the counting system, which progresses from filling in a basic group of 10 in various rows, followed by straight down a column, followed by the middle of one row to the middle of the next row, followed by various randomized or different patterns. Progressive and systematic. Easy. During this stage, I had my child redo numbers that needed handwriting practice, going back to the tracing sections for specific numbers until her muscle memory improved.

Use the counting sections to constantly find patterns. For example, when filling down a column, have them recognize that the 1's space stays the same and the 10's space increases by 1's versus rows where the 10's space stays the same and the 1's space increases. Have them point out any other patterns they see, regardless of how simple or how many times they've seen it before. Page 27 #4 was an especially good pattern for this age - I asked her to predict the next two numbers and she easily got it even though it was the only time that specific pattern was used. That is because we took advantage of the basic patterns used earlier in the book. The final counting lesson (#14) pushes up to 120, so students understand how to continue the counting system beyond the standard stopping point of 100. I graded her based on her quality of handwriting, making her take as much time as necessary to make it look as good as she could. I slowly increased my standards to push her progress, but tried to be realistic about what a kindergartner's hands can do.

After that, they will write the number that comes next, using an arrow as a designator. It quickly transitions between the arrow and the more traditional 'x + 1 =' system. They will learn that addition is simply an extension of the counting system. Then there are many pages of practice and that is the point: repetition creates mastery. It does this again with 2's, then 3's, and so on, but each additional number uses less and less pages of practice because it is an easy transition from one step to the next. We always found patterns afterwards; for example, if one number is held constant and the other other number being added to it increases by 1, then the answers must also increase by 1. Basic, but very important. I don't point them out directly. I ask her to find them, sometimes using guiding questions, and then we work together to create a statement that is mathematically clear; you can sneak words into their vocabulary like row, column, constant, diagonal, ...

Grading was important. If she got something wrong, I would tell her how many were incorrect, but she would have to find them. She got half credit back for each one she fixed. If she still missed one after the check, then no credit, but we went over them carefully until she had it down. Sloppy handwriting wasn't counted as incorrect unless it was totally unreadable, but I made her erase and redo anything that she obviously didn't put a good effort behind. The emphasis was on effort made, not getting the writing perfect. All lessons were untimed from her perspective. I did time them occasionally to see how she was progressing. I allowed her to use her fingers, but encouraged her to try not to. By the end of the book, she was mostly done with that crutch.

She really wanted 100%. She didn't always get it and this book helped her to understand that it isn't possible to get 100% all the time, but it doesn't mean you aren't good at it. Early on in the addition section (adding 2) she tried to bang out two consecutive lessons as fast as possible and scored a 70-something and an 80-something. She was disappointed. Our discussions on what good effort means finally hit home for her. She improved her focus and stopped racing. I also changed my standard that I would not check her work until she had checked it herself first. I didn't place much emphasis on the grade after the lesson (I was really doing it so that she wold be used to the idea of being graded), but she saw it as a challenge, so I took advantage of that and used it to improving her concentration skills such as filtering out distractors and such. Still, under no circumstances did I allow it to be a negative experience; we worked through it until it was always a positive experience, using the concept of continuous growth.

By the end of the book, she was confidently adding 16+12, 13+13, 15+13, 12+13, 9+14, ... 50 of those, in her head (no fingers for counting), good handwriting, 100% accuracy in 58 seconds (give or take a few seconds). That's what this book does if you take full advantage. Totally worth it. In all, we spent about 7 months on this book, moving at a casual pace and supplementing it with other skills such as mazes, money, time, logic, writing, science... mostly from those 1st grade practice books every bookstore has. The outcome is what I care about, not how quickly we get there.

The only book your child needs to learn basic addition

This book takes a child from writing single digit numbers through addition of numbers into the teens. This corresponds roughly to the arithmetic taught in the first semester of first grade in most U.S. public schools. Prior to starting this book, the child should already know how to count, at least to 20 and perhaps to 100. In addition, children at this level may need an adult to read the brief instructions on each page, and perhaps to help explain some of the initial concepts if the child is entirely unfamiliar with addition.

The book consists of 43 double pages of problems, with some front matter and an answer key in the back. The 43 double pages are as follows:

1-5 (10 pages) are on writing numbers, starting with single digits and going up to 20. There is some tracing to help beginners learn how to form the digits. There are dot patterns to help the child understand the correspondence between the numerals and the quantities they represent.

6-14 (18 pages) are on writing two digit numbers by filling in blanks in tables of numbers, starting with tables up to 30 and progressing to tables that go up to 120. Writing the numbers in context reinforces the ordering of the numbers; in addition, the arrangement of the tables in rows of 10 helps prepare for the learning of place values later on.

15 (2 pages) are on the relationship between ordering and adding 1, teaching the child that adding one is the same as incrementing to the next number.

16-20 (10 pages) are on adding 1 to numbers up to 118, for sums up to 119, reinforcing the relationship between incrementing and adding.

21-25 (10 pages) are on adding 2, starting with a half page illustration of how adding two is the same as incrementing twice, and then proceeding with drill on adding two to single digit and double digit numbers into the 40s.

26-28 (6 pages) are on adding 3, starting with a half page illustration of how adding three is the same as incrementing thrice, and also initially providing a number line on which the child can count ahead by three when adding 3 to single digit numbers. There are then a few pages of drill on adding 3 to single and double digit numbers into the 20s.

29-30 (4 pages) are drill on adding 4 to single and double digit numbers into the teens. In the remainder of the book, where a single digit and a double digit number are added, the double digit number is between 10 and 19 inclusive.

31-39 (18 pages) are drill on adding 5 (4 pages), adding 6 (4 pages), adding 7 (3 pages), adding 8 (3 pages), adding 9 (3 pages) and adding 10 (1 page) to single and double digit numbers.

40-42 (6 pages) are drill on adding various single digit numbers to single and double digit numbers.

43 (2 pages) is a review, consisting of filling in blanks in a table of numbers from 61 to 100 and adding single digit numbers.

The book provides a lot of repetition throughout; it can be started by a child who only knows how to count verbally and how to hold a pen, pencil, or crayon, and by the end of the book the child should have a good grasp of addition and a start on memorizing the sums of single digit numbers.

On completion of the book, the child is ready to move on to Grade 1 Subtraction (Kumon Math Workbooks), which introduces additional arithmetic concepts, and corresponds roughly to the arithmetic taught in the second semester of first grade in most U.S. public schools. The addition and subtraction books can optionally be supplemented with Geometry & Measurement Grade 1 (Kumon Math Workbooks) and Word Problems Grade 1 (Kumon Math Workbooks), especially if these books are used as a full home school curriculum, rather than as a supplement to public or private schooling.

Of course, the point of the Kumon workbooks is to allow your child to proceed at his or her own pace, irrespective of age. The Kumon math workbooks are designed to work together in a progression, so it's best to select a first workbook for your child that includes your child's current proficiency level.

Unlike other workbooks, the Kumon workbooks focus on introducing a few concepts gradually and providing enough repetition to ensure the child actually learns the concepts. For children who enjoy working alone, the workbook is likely to be all that is needed to progress through the relevant material. For more gregarious children, the card games Sleeping Queens and Zeus on the Loose may help with learning and drilling on addition concepts and practice, but workbooks will still be needed for proficiency in putting the results on paper. For my first grade daughter, the combination of this workbook and the two card games gave her proficiency and confidence with addition, and took her from thinking she was "bad at school" to realizing that she was "good at math".

Absolutely stunning!

The subtletly and artistry of this book is apparent from the very first turn of a page. Chris Ranier, one of the world's foremost documentary photographers, has created a artful, evocative record of the human canvass posed against the natural landscape. The photographs focus mostly on tattoing and scarification, and are oriented toward the tribal, both traditional and modern. This is an essential addition to any body art library, and at less than $30, the paperback version (which also includes a DVD) is a real bargain. I cannot recommend this enough.

Awesome book by a great photographer

I bought this book as a gift for my girlfriend but stole it back. It isn't all about tattoos, which it may lead you to believe, but includes bits about all types of body modification techniques. The photographer is a well known National Geographic photographer, and his work certainly doesn't fail here. Good coffee table book if you have stuck up inlaws like I do that would be made uncomfortable by the sight of it.

Another Masterpiece

This is truly a wonderful book. Rainier's other book, "Where Masks Still Dance: New Guinea" was fabulous in its presentation and images, but this book goes one better with a dvd enhanced with music by Anoushka Shankar which can be viewed on its own. The music perfectly complements the starkness of the haunting images. Tattoos,scarification, and other bodily modifications of many cultures are showcased here without calling unecessary attention to these adornments as bizarre/freakish as in some other books which are designed to shock/titillate.

Great, but needs editing

This book gives a great understanding of SQL Server core concepts and best practices. The most important tasks like installation and basic configuration are explained in great detail, and it is mostly clear and concise. Sadly though, it is riddled with typos and bears the markings of a book rushed by a deadline. Hopefully this will be fixed in later editions, for it is otherwise a great book.

I bought this book to prepare for the 70-462 exam. This was to be the book to give me a strong base knowledge and I bought another one that was to be more exam centric. This book did exactly what I wanted and more. It should be on every DBAs shelf. I have read it once all the way through and would like to find time to take another pass sitting in front of a computer to test the examples to get the most out of it. I will definitely keep it as a reference.

A must have book in every DBA's arsenal

This book is definitely a must read. From anyone just starting with SQL Server or a seasoned database professional, this book has something for all.
The book starts with an overview of the new features in SQL Server 2012 and then talks about SQL installation/upgradation best practices. It then covers topics related to configuration, service broker, CLR integration, security & change management. These topics are so vast in themselves that one should not expect a very detailed coverage, although, the authors have made sure the reader gets enough knowledge to be able to go off their own. What I liked most about this book is its coverage of topics related to performance tuning & optimization. There are at least 3-4 chapters which are very detailed and informative. I'm sure beginner & intermediate DBAs will hugely benefit from this. The authors have also covered the regular topics related to replication, clustering, backup/restore, log shipping, database mirroring etc.
There is also a small chapter on SQL Azure administration & configuration. The much hyped SQL Server 2012 feature of AlwaysOn also gets its own chapter in the book too.
Finally, the book does not miss out on covering the reporting services, analysis service, integration services & sharepoint integration.
To summarize, I think the book does justice to its size(around 900 pages). It provides crisp and concise information related to basics & specialized topics. However, it does leave a lot to be explored by a DBA on his own. For a huge product like SQL Server, even several volumes might not be able to cover all.
I recommend this book to my fellow DBAs. Go for it.....

The evolution of microcontrollers (i.e., single-chip microcomputers) has been driven by two strong trends. One trend is the demand for a low-cost means of putting intelligence into a product. When a product is produced in quantities of millions, a small savings in component cost will drive component selection decisions. Another trend is the demand for a programmable solution when an application has severe timing constraints, such as those in automobile engine control. This demand has led to ever faster, more sophisticated microcontroller architectures. Microchip Technology has evolved its product line of PIC microcontrollers from simple, low-cost devices. Subsequent generations of PIC microcontrollers have included enhancements to meet the needs of an increasing circle of applications. At the same time, Microchip has never lost sight of the value of introducing new technology at the lowest possible cost and thereby "buying" market share. As pointed out in Chapter 1 of this text, Microchip has followed this strategy to the point where it is now the number two producer of eight-bit microcontrollers in the world, with a market share that continues to rise each year. Because eight-bit microcontrollers span the needs of most applications, "eight-bitters" dominate the world of microcontrollers.

This book is developed around Microchip's latest family of parts, the PIC I8FXXX family. It focuses on the PIC 18F452, a new part brought to market in May 2002. It is a 40-pin microcontroller upgrade of their earlier PIC 16C74 and PIC 16F877 microcontrollers. This upgrade will be familiar to users of those parts, but with myriad enhancements. Virtually all of the quirks that characterized earlier PIC microcontroller parts have been eliminated. The flash program memory of the PIC 1817452 microcontroller makes low-cost development possible. Not only is the part inexpensive (less than $10 in single quantities), but it is supported by Microchip's free assembler and by a free Qwikl3ug monitor program. QwikBug, once programmed into the chip, supports the downloading of successive iterations of a user program and supports the ability to debug the user program with the help of running to a breakpoint, monitoring/changing watch variables, and single-stepping.

To provide a "learning by doing" environment, a QwikFlash development board is included inside the back cover of this first printing of the book. A photograph of the populated board is shown in Figure 4-1. Readers not interested in using this board may wish to know that the board is included, gratis, courtesy of a friend of the author. Parts for populating the board can be purchased under a special arrangement with the DigiKey Corporation. Appendix Al includes the Digi-Key parts list as well as construction hints, intended both for the novice who has never soldered before and for the experienced student, professional, and hobbyist. Alternatively, a populated board can be purchased from MICRODESIGNS, Inc. via their Web site, www.microdesignsinc.com .

Throughout this book, the approach taken is to introduce a template of assembly language code that encompasses a set of features of the PIC18F452 plus its interactions with some of the I/O devices resident on the QwikFlash board. In this way, it is intended that the reader will find a smooth path to the creative process of writing enhanced application code. There is no end to the variety of such enhancements, many of which are suggested in the end-of-chapter problems. Others are listed in Appendix A10 as a set of suggested lab projects that might accompany the first offering of a college or university course organized around this book. Still other project enhancements are suggested by the presence of the many features of the microcontroller and by the versatility of the QwikFlash board's I/O devices themselves.

Many years ago, Skip Addison impressed me with the clarity that his structured assembler could bring to the writing of code. Its implementation of nested IF . . . ELSE... ENDIF, WHILE . . . ENDWHILE, and REPEAT . . . UNTIL constructs gave assembly language the clean control flow normally associated with a compiled language such as C. At this time, Jessica Meremonte has prepared a free structured assembly preprocessor that, together with Microchip's free (and excellent) assembler, does this same thing for code writing with the PIC18F452 microcontroller. Introduced in Chapter 6, the use of Jessica's sasm utility acts like a one-step assembler. It enhances the code writing process, and code understandability, for the remaining 14 chapters of the book.

To utilize a microcontroller effectively, a designer should develop at least three capabilities, each of which is addressed in this book. First, he or she must understand available components. This begins with the microcontroller itself, with its CPU register structure, its instruction set, its addressing modes, and its on-chip resources. It extends to user I/O devices such as keypads and displays and sensing/ control devices such as temperature transducers and stepper motor actuators. Using interrupt control, a microcontroller can juggle many real-time activities simultaneously. To achieve this without error, the designer must understand how the microcontroller handles interrupts and the timing issues related to them.

Second, the designer must thoroughly understand the algorithmic processes required by each aspect of the design and be able to translate them into the language of the microcontroller. For example, the design of an antilock brake system for an automobile involves an understanding of both the brake system dynamics and the implementation of a suitable control algorithm.

Third, the designer must understand how the extensive requirements of an instrument or device can be broken down into manageable parts. Almost any project can be likened to the process of jumping from boulder to boulder to cross a stream. Each boulder may represent the design ideas needed to understand and use a device such as a liquid crystal display. But in addition to studying boulders, the designer must pay attention to how streams are crossed. Through examples, both with the template programs and with complete designs available on the author's web site (e.g., the source code for the QwikFlash instrument described in Section 4.3), the reader can view the structure of several projects.

This book attempts to organize and unify the development of these three capabilities: to understand and use components, to exploit powerful algorithmic processes, and to break down the complexity of an instrument or device so as to meet its specifications.

ABOUT THE BOOK

This book will typically be used in a one-semester course at the senior level. Alternatively, it might be used at the junior level if it is deemed worthwhile to trade the increased engineering experience of seniors for the opportunity to follow this course with other design-oriented courses and individual project activities. Although the context of the book is electrical, each component is sufficiently explained to permit the book to be used in a variety of curricula as an introduction to design using a microcontroller. The incentive to so use the book lies in the diverse applications made possible by the availability of a "controller on a chip."

There has been an attempt to make many parts of the book self-contained. A reader might scan Chapter 1 to gain the perspective of Steve Sanghi, CEO and President of Microchip Technology. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the PIC18F452's CPU structure, instructions, and addressing modes. The brief Chapter 4 describes the features of the QwikFlash board (i.e., the built-up version of the bare board located on the inside back cover of the book). This description includes one application of the board as a QwikFlash instrument to measure frequencies and time intervals with uncanny accuracy, using a free program available from the author's web site.

Chapters 5 and 6 present the first template of code and a discussion of development alternatives. This latter discussion is augmented in the appendices. Appendix sections A1.2 and A4.3 describe Microchip's ICD2 in in-circuit debugger. Appendix A4 describes the free QwikBug on-chip monitor program and what it takes to program it into a chip. Appendix A3 describes how the free sasm structured assembler utility can be used with or without the support of Microchip's MPLAB facility. Appendix section A5.2 describes the free QwikAddress utility and the help it provides in conjunction with the sasm utility.

Chapter 7 develops the use of the liquid-crystal display built into the QwikFlash board. A second template of code is presented, serving as a stepping stone for subsequent project work. Chapters 8 and 12 augment the discussion of user I/O available on the board. Chapter 8 discusses a widely used input device, the rotary pulse generator (RPG). Chapter 12 develops what amounts to an allocation scheme play and the RPG, for user input.

Chapter 9 discusses the timing and the critical region issues associated with interrupts. It describes the high- and low-priority mechanisms built into the chip to field interrupts and explains how to allocate interrupt sources between the two so as to be most effective in meeting the timing requirements of and application.

The remaining chapters of the book can be "mixed and matched" to meet the needs of a course and its sequencing of lab projects. Chapters 13 and 16 explain in detail how to use the PIC 18F452's superb timers for capturing the timing of input events and for controlling the timing for output events. Chapters l describe the nuances of using the chip's analog and digital input pins. Chapter 14 explains how to use any of Microchip's library of 36 integer subroutines for dealing with the multiplication and division of multiple-byte unsigned and signed numbers. It also explains how to use their eight floating-point subroutines and the role of these subroutines in retaining the precision of a computation. Chapters 15 and 17 delve into two approaches for expanding the number of I/O pins available as well as two convenient means for enhancing the peripheral capabilities of the chip beyond those peripherals already built chip. Chapter 18 discusses the use of the UART built into the chip while Chapter 19 looks at how a low-end PIC microcontroller can be used as a smart peripheral, connecting to the PIC 1817452 through one of its UART pins. Chapter 20 discusses a variety of disparate but significant features of the chip, including the use of its non-volatile data EEPROM, its watchdog timer and brownout reset circuits, and how it can be operated to achieve an exceedingly low battery supply current.

The last two template programs, P3 and P4, are recast as C programs written by Mike Chow and included in Appendix A7. Each one is written for both Microchip Technology's C compiler and Hi-Tech Software's C compiler, two high-quality C compilers. A class that makes the switch from assembly coding can benefit from the use of the P3 template, cast in C. As a template for subsequent work, it encompasses many issues that will arise as further code is written. The P4 template illustrates how to handle interrupts.

This book is directed toward a specific goal of engineering studies—the development of creative capability. Given a powerful, low-cost microcontroller chip, a low-cost development board, and the development tools needed to develop and debug program code, we are able to focus the design process on the microcontroller chip itself and a variety of I/O devices, thereby giving zest to the process of learning. While some of these I/O devices are available on the QwikFlash board itself, the laboratory for a college or university course can make use of a second QwikProto board to expand the variety of 1/O resources easily, as described in Appendix A2 and illustrated, by example, in the photograph of Figure A2-5. Other I/O possibilities are described there and in Appendix section A 10.2. Also refer to the author's web site, www.picbook.com , for URLs pointing to I/O device information and project ideas being employed at other universities. To help readers take advantage of the opportunities for developing microcontroller design capability, most chapters close with an assortment of problems, many having a design flavor. A suggested course calendar is included at the beginning of Appendix A10 along with 10 "starter" lab projects.

Useful information, poor layout.

If having technical diagrams over the page to the corresponding text annoys you, then be prepared to be annoyed! The book doesn't get going really until chapter 3, however I found that having the technical figures (in most cases) not on the page or adjoining page, but having to flick back and forth a distraction to my concentration. The diagrams while helpful are a little confusing with the way in which they are layed out.
In some places after describing a method in addressing registers, the example uses an alternative - fine, if in the context of, there is more than one way to achieve this, but this is patently not the context here.
The book seems to be really designed to be part of a classroom tutorial and discussion.
Be ready to put in some extra concentration if your buying this book without resource to other literature.
On the whole the book is technically useful, the hardcover pleasant, but the placing of the diagrams really let the book down.

Excellent Book - Great follow-on first book

John's book is a great follow on to his original book, "Design with PIC Microcontrollers. The book is not a cut and paste solution (As are two other good books "Easy PIC'n" and "PIC'n Up The Pace") and is intended to teach the student how to best use the architecture. The intent of the book is to give the student enough theory to use the PIC18F452 and understand the design philosophy of the architecture. The book is a great compliment to the Microchip datasheet service as a "user's guide". Great examples of how the 18F452 architecture can be best utilized, well organized diagrams (Which, by the way do not require "flicking back and forth" any more that a typical technical book I've read ). The subject material covers all of the highlights of the PIC18F452, giving examples for typical usages of LCD displays, A/D, Interrupts, I/O pin considerations, timers, math subroutines, I2C/SMBus usage, UART, etc. There are supporting code template designed to suggest possible code organization. The book develops a very useful utility (SASM) to preprocess PIC assembly in an attempt to make assembly language more structured. The utility IS NOT required and the rest of the book may be read without using the utility. I had no problem obtaining the components for the included circuit board (All required parts can be purchased as a kit from Digi-Key at a discount) and found it very comparable to Microchip's own demo boards.

Many illustrations to help you visualize

Although some material in the book can be read from spec sheets found on the net, the book really helps to sort through a lot of the clutter in spec sheets. A major benefit of this book is that it provides plenty of detailed illustrations to help you understand the facilities of the PIC instead of simply giving you page after page of techical specs. It also provides plenty of "template" code to help you get up and running if you're kind of new to microcontroller assembly.
If you do the sample projects throughout the book, they really help you better understand most of the facilities of the PIC.
One thing to note is that the book is written for a semester long college course though I think it's doable for self-study if you have at least some background with PICs. It even provides a PCB on the back cover whereby you can build your own board (I think you can order a package from digikey that has all the parts you need to build one) to run your code on.

About the Author

David Grembowski, Ph.D., M.A., is a professor in the Department of Health Ser- vices in the School of Public Health and the Department of Oral Health Sciences in the School of Dentistry, and adjunct professor in the Department of Sociology, at the University of Washington. He has taught health program evaluation to graduate students for more than twenty years. His evaluation interests are prevention, the performance of health programs and health care systems, survey research methods, and the social determinants of population health. His other work has examined efforts to improve quality by increasing access to care in integrated delivery systems; pharmacy outreach to provide statins preventively to patients with diabetes; managed care and physician referrals; managed care and patient-physician relationships and physician job satisfaction; cost-effectiveness of preventive services for older adults; cost-sharing and seeing out-of-network physicians; social gradients in oral health; local health department spending and racial/ethnic disparities in mortality rates; fluoridation effects on oral health and dental demand; financial incentives and dentist adoption of preventive technologies; effects of dental insurance on dental demand; and the link between mother and child access to dental care.
