Excellent and Very Large Sci-Fi Compilation

I couldn't believe all the information they managed to place in this history of Science Fiction. It covers the media spectrum: Movies, TV, books, magazines and it's loaded with photos. I have a number of similar texts going back to the 1970's, this is one of the best.

A Remarkable Resource for Every Science Fiction Fan

The 576 densely packed pages of "Sci-Fi Chronicles" contain more interesting information per square inch than any other book about the genre that I've encountered in recent memory--if not ever. At the volume's bargain-basement Amazon price, the cost per useful data byte is minuscule. Why, it's practically free. Who could resist it?

"Sci-Fi Chronicles" is not the type of book to sit down with and read from cover to cover. That would be a Herculean task indeed. It's more of an encyclopedia, but in the best possible way. For example, I have no use for traditional encyclopedias and their dry, boring lists of topics sparsely covered in a paragraph or two each. Rather, "Sci-Fi Chronicles" is a stand-alone, fully integrated, visually stunning, utterly fascinating repository of detailed information about the entire universe of sci-fi in all of its splendor.

The magnitude of General Editor Guy Haley and the contributors' achievement amazes me every time I pick up this book and spend an hour or so just random-associating my through it. Books, authors, movies, TV shows--they're all in here, at just the right level of detail. Topics receive as much coverage as they warrant--a page, two pages, several separate sections--based on their roles and importance in the history of the genre. The approach works perfectly, in my opinion.

Whatever you do, don't skim over the "How to Use This Book" section on pages 12 and 13. Read it carefully. It explains how to use the color codes, icons, notes, sidebars and timelines that appear in the book. These elements are a must for the reader to understand in order to get the most out of this superb magnum opus.

Heart warming, funny, and down-to-earth

A feel good book. Period.
John Wright was the coach of the Indian cricket team for five years, and the Indian cricket team had unprecedented success during that period. Coincidence or not I don't know.

The book is neatly divided into chapters that correspond to a tour or season of the Indian team. So, there is one chapter each on the Australian team's visit of 2001 (who can forget that!), India's tour of Pakistan in 2004, the England tour of 2002, the West Indies tour of 2002, the Australian tour of 2003-04, etc... Then there is a chapter on Wright's experiences with the selection system, its regional quota system, another one on the struggles that the aspiring Indian cricketer has to go through to make it, or not. Srinath, Kaif, Kumble, Yuvraj, Harbhajan and many more are covered...

A few things I really liked about the book - Wright almost never drops names to sensationalize or scandalize, he writes about controversial topics without resorting to being sensationalistic (the Dravid declaration in the Multan test when Tendulkar was on 194* for examplem or about the team manager who liked to shortchange the team on their lunch money). The second point is that Wright ultimately comes across as a very decent man with a genuine love for India - which is very heartwarming indeed (contrast it with the rather supercilious 'In Spite of the Gods' by Ed Luce).

Rather than write more, I shall simply include excerpts from the book itself:

"I'd aspired to a successful second career. I wanted at all costs to avoid living in the past. In a sense, I failed." [Page 8]

About his visit to India for the interview as India's coach:
"The BCCI's travel people had told me just to turn up at the Lufthansa check-in counter with my passport; everything would have been taken care of. The dragon behind the desk asked, "Where's your visa. You can't travel without a visa." ... I could have produced a ukulele and serenaded her with 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips'. She was one of those implacable petty functionaries whose guiding principle is that there's no point in having the power to screw up people's lives unless you exercise it. I spoke to her supervisor, who'd evidently taught her everything she knew." [page 24]

Care to guess who Wright's talking about here?
"In Jodhpur, a guy with the biggest diamond ear-studs I'd ever seen wandered into our viewing area as if it was his private box. I went nuts demanding to know who the hell he was and, more to the point, who the hell he thought he was. The answer to both questions was that he was India's biggest beer baron." [page 43] - it's the one and only Vijay Mallya!

Here is spot on, and this is especially true of the press and former Indian cricketers (Bishen Bedi is one) who go overboard in running down the Indian team. Anyway, John has no love lost for the Australians, as is evident from the last sentence!
"Indians love their own team, but when a major side arrives they know how to make the tourists feel special. There's very little of the media mind games and psychological warfare you get touring some other countries, notably Australia, where the welcome usually takes the form of a dismissive spray from a famous ex-player." [page 46]

About the greatest Test every played:
"India is a country of one billion people, but on the second night of the second test in Kolkata I sat in a room 214 of the Taj Bengal with what felt like my only friends: four cans of Heineken and five cigarettes. Australia had made 445, despite a Harbhajan hat-trick, the first by an Indian in a test, and we were 128 for 8." [page 50]

"They were all out for 212 in 68 overs; having followed-on, we'd won the test by 171 runs. I remember embracing Andrew and dancing a jig with him... " [page 55]

"People would stop me in the street to thank for being 'our' coach. It was humbling, but also guilt-inducing, because many of those who thanked me for doing a well-paid job that I loved led lives of day-to-day struggle. The gratitude and support I received from ordinary Indians was the most positive force I've ever encountered, in that it simultaneously lifted me and kept my feet on the ground." [page 70]

Sabse bada rupaiyya:
"I had many deep and meaningful pre-game discussions with Indian groundsmen, pointing out that we had two spinners, so would they please push the ropes back? Then the TV company would demand more space for the advertising hoardings, and when we arrived at the ground on match day the ropes would have come in again and I'd get dark looks from the spinners. Money talked a lot louder than I did." [page 113]

"Yuvraj Singh's father, Yograj Singh, was a medium pacer who took 1 test wicket in his single test. Here's a clue: his sole scalp was a dashing left-hand opening bat from New Zealand who thrilled crowds the world over and later went into coaching." [page 117]

The 2003 World Cup match against Pakistan:
"As our openers walked down the long flight of stairs to begin the chase, Viru told Sachin, "Don't say anything to me about my batting except 'go and lagao' - basically, go for it. Sachin replied, 'I'm going to get these guys.'"

"Decked out in military uniform, General Musharraf spoke of the two teams setting an example of co-existence. Once he'd get the serious stuff out of the way, he had both teams in fits of laughter, referring to the sweets we were being served as 'weapons of mass destruction'. He said he knew the Karachi match was getting tight when he saw Inzamam-ul-Haq dive for the crease for the first time in 14 years.[page 178-179]"

Ricky W. Griffin serves as Distinguished Professor of Management and Blocker Chair in Business at Texas A&M. He received his Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of Houston. He served as editor of the Journal of Management and as an officer in the Southwest Regional Division of the Academy of Management, the Southern Management Association, and the Research Methods Division and the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. Dr. Griffin spent three years on the faculty at the University of Missouri (Columbia) before moving to Texas A&M University in 1981. His research interests include workplace violence, employee health and well-being in the workplace, and workplace culture. About the Author

Carina Bartsch was born in 1985 in Erlangen, Germany, in the Franconia region of Bavaria. Her love of writing came late, but intensely. After searching since childhood for something she would really enjoy doing, at age twenty she finally wrote her first short story. Instantly, she realized: this is it. Four years later, after she had won several writing competitions, Bartsch published her debut novel, Cherry Red Summer. For more on the author, please visit www.carinabartsch.de.

Erik J. Macki worked as a cherry-orchard tour guide, copyeditor, web developer, and German and French teacher before settling into his translation career. A former resident of Cologne and Münster, Germany, and of Tours, France, he did his graduate work in Germanics and comparative syntax. He now translates books for adults and children full-time and has translated works by Kerstin Gier, Mirjam Pressler, Jutta Profijt, and Sara Blædel, among others. He works from his home in Seattle, where he lives with his family and their black Lab, Zephyr.

full of emotion and subtle drama

I’d seen some mixed reviews so wasn’t sure I'd enjoy this book, but the description sounded interesting and I decided to give it a chance. I’m so glad I did, it’s a great read. A very different sort of romance to what I’ve found lately, one focussed on the magic of the journey into a relationship and the emotions and feelings of the characters. There’s no insta-love between Emely and Elyas, rather its the opposite, a reaction from their high school time seven years ago.
Emely – I liked her. I understand her in so many ways, she’s a lot like I was at that age, socially awkward, incredibly self conscious and mentally inept, taking apart conversations for a long time after trying to see where she could have done better, or what exactly someone meant. Add in the Klutziness ( I still have that!) and I could see just why her high school years where she had an unrequited love for Elyas, which he abused, were such a torment. Sometimes though in the current time she’s a bit OTT, almost offensive in the way she reacts, although I can see its her method of self protection. It’s a brittle shell of protection, she doesn’t want to go through that heartbreak a second time – she won’t recover. What I was desperate to know though is what did happen between her and Elyas? It clearly had a very long effect on her if she still can’t be OK with him, even though they were close in childhood and his sister remains her best friend.
Then there’s Elyas – what we see of him he’s a nice guy, he’s a hunk, and a charmer but then at his age most guys would take advantage of having an attraction for women. He’s got that same pull to Emely as before, and she’s finding it hard to keep that attraction at bay, even though she thinks he’s a jerk, cruel, broke her heart, and thinks he’s always trying to catch her out. When he compliments her she’s thinks it’s sarcasm. It may be – but then again he may genuinely mean it, and just her lack of confidence that makes her read it as sarcasm...certainly he’s pleasant and helpful to her...He looks a jerk when things are seen through Emely’s eyes but then when we see it from his view things are completely different.
Of course we can’t forget Luca, he seems the dream man, although she’s only met him online....that doesn't stop her hoping though, and why can’t she focus on him and let her attraction to Elyas wane?
Well, I loved this book, its full of so much drama, not on the seat, heart in throat kind, but the more subtle type that comes from misunderstandings. Of course we can see things from both sides and I was thinking “ no, no, no...” much of the while when they both misunderstood each other “ arghhhh – just Talk to each other. Ask him/ her what that meant...” but then there’d be no story Smile but its the kind of read for me that made me feel there with them, upset with them, happy when it looked like things were looking up. There’s a big part of which I'd guessed but that didn’t stop me enjoying this book, and breaking my rule of reviewing before reading the sequel...I just HAD to know where things went next, and the book was on my kindle so...
It doesn’t have hot, steamy sex, but even the almost innocent, on the cheek kisses take on a sensual feel the way they are part of the story. I enjoyed that, where we got such an insight into the characters thoughts and emotions, where we learned just how misunderstandings can have such a huge effect in out lives.
Stars: Five, a great read for me, very unusual but if you love emotion in a story then you’ll love this.

Light read - not too deep

This book captures the experience of having a crush on a boy and the unfolding feeling of excitement and fear of knowing that it is reciprocated. Reading it I felt like I had been transported back to high school.

I give compliments to the book on the fact that I found it engaging enough to finish the entire book. The main character had a sharp tongue of witty insults throughout the book which were entertaining. The characters were predictable as was the plot.

I felt the book could have been half as long without losing anything in the storyline. The characters were not particularly likeable, but I did find myself rooting for a happy ending. The author did a good job of capturing the human essence and emotions of making mistakes, misreading others, and having an attraction.

I recommend this book as a light read to pass the time on a vacation.

This book provides a range of useful techniques for those involved in organising special events, and is also useful for students. The book is in two sections, the first section is about the events business, the second, larger section, is about how to organise events.
The book has many features to help the reader prepare their own event, with useful forms for the beginner, lots of charts and diagrams, and a range of case studies from many countries.
The book contains helpful suggestions from real life events, especially from festivals, carnivals and tourism events. The book is easy to read, with clear language. The case studies give web addresses so the reader can look for more information on the net related to them.
The most useful thing about the book is that it is a good book for organisers and managers to have on their shelf.

Compare with Event Planning Made Easy, it is more difficult to read, but can brings you to the correct way and direction to run an event.
