About the Author
Amy Werbel currently serves as an Associate Professor of the History of Art at the State University of New York - Fashion Institute of Technology. From 1994 to 2013, she was Professor of Art History and American Studies at Saint Michael’s College. Professor Werbel is the the author of numerous works on the subject of American visual culture, sexuality, and censorship including: Thomas Eakins: Art, Medicine, and Sexuality in Nineteenth-Century Philadelphia (Yale University Press, 2007). Professor Werbel is a graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges (A.B. ’86) and Yale University (PhD ’96), and the recipient of fellowships and grants from numerous institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. She served as a Fulbright Scholar for 2011-2012 at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou, China. She is the mother of two sons, ages 19 and 15, and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and fellow writer, Frederick Lane.

Captures the hearts & minds of today's Chinese students

As a teacher in Chinese Universities since 2008, I found Ms. Werbel's observations equally grounded in her student's own words and her own incisive observations. This book is a part of an emerging China literature that is a bit more mature than the initial exotic, instant and superficial experts of earlier years. She dives into her students' thoughtful essays - many in a kind of Chinglish - and yet more than understandable and selects thoughtful morsels for her readers to taste, digest, and savor. In this way, I consider her a bridge builder - one who will help two of the world's civilization understand each other better.

Ms. Werbel's passion for teaching is stunning and her love of seeing her students's eyes light up is palpable in her writing. If you ever thought of a year in China teaching in a University, "Lessons from China" is your primer on how to do it!

She is an adventurer & her detailed descriptions of several side trips and local immersion are delightful. Buy this book - recommend it to others!

"Lessons from China" is an engaging, thoughtful, and stimulating account of Amy Werbel's year as a Fulbright Scholar teaching at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, in Guangzou China. In 2011-2012 the author taught courses on "Culture in the United States from the Civil War to World War I" and "America in the 1960s" to graduate students at GDUFS; traveled throughout China as a guest lecturer; mentored and befriended several graduate students; learned the ins and outs of negotiating ethnic and linguistic divisions and barriers within China; and absorbed much else about contemporary China's cultural, intellectual, and political environment that she reports in her book.
American readers will find much here to engage their minds, both in Werbel's account of her teaching and in her accounts--supported with long unedited quotations from student homework and examination papers--of Chinese students' reception and perception of American history and culture. Werbel and her students discussed topics such as race relations, the counterculture of the 1960s, censorship, the dynamics of reform, and the Vietnam War. She introduced them to the practice and skills of dialogue, critical thinking, and the use of primary sources, which in turn raises important questions about the nature and future of higher education in both China and America.
Reading this account of a year of teaching and learning leaves an American reader with a lot to ponder: our understanding and assessment of our own history and institutions, how others perceive them, and the role of the liberal arts and critical thinking in our own system of higher education.

The Real China Lessons

Excellent read and insight into today's China. Having lived half my time in Shenzhen, China (City next to Guangzhou) over the last 12 years, I could relate and found her book thoroughly enjoyable. I truely appreciated Amy Werbel's warmth, compassion, and humorous portraits of her experiences teaching in China. Her insight into the goals, ambitions, and fears of her students are real. The pressure on the students from peers, schools, and parents to succeed are fact. Her personal trials and tribulations adapting to Chinese culture are similar to others connecting with the 'China experience'. This is a 'must read' for those interested in China and the Chinese.
Amazing how fast China is growing. For example, in the few years gone by since she taught in Guangzhou, the 'one child' policy is giving way to 'two children' with Xi Jiping's government policies. The generation that Professor Werbel taught will soon become the new China. I like what I read. I like what Professor Werbel added to the lives of her students. I have hope for China's future. You, your children, your parents, and your husband have given wonderful insight to Chinese students into the real America and Americans---who could ask for more to communicate the human experiences between people of different cultures. Yeah Amy!

Malcolm Longair is Emeritus Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy and Director of Development at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. He has held many highly distinguished positions within physics and astronomy and has served on and chaired many international committees, boards and panels, working with both NASA and the European Space Agency. He has received much recognition for his work, including the Pilkington Prize of the University of Cambridge for Excellence in Teaching and a CBE in the millennium honours list for his services to astronomy and cosmology. His previous well-received books for Cambridge University Press include Theoretical Concepts in Physics (2003), The Cosmic Century: A History of Astrophysics and Cosmology (2005) and High Energy Astrophysics (2011).

well written about the essential parts in undergraduate physics

I received this book for exam copy from cambridge University Press.
It is well arranged accordingto the intelligently designed purpose
as well as historical flow in physics. Each chapter selected in great
discernment and deep thought from scratch. I think this book provide
most essential part of undergraduate physics in detailed concept and
historical development perspective in sharp insight using reasonable
degree of mathematical skill. I was really impressed and highly recommend!

Great book from a historical standpoint

Although it does not teach you methods in Theoretical Physics(such as Morse and Feshbach or Theoretical Physics by George Joos), it does tell you how the great physicists got to bring about the great physical "Theorems". But to be fair, he tells you enough about each great theory there is out there by taking it up as a case study based on some fundamental(amthematical and physical) knowledge. I think it's a brilliant book from both a historical perspective as well as from a informative standpoint. I've had it for years and love the book

One of a kind and amazing

Historical introduction to the world of advanced physics. Use for a British honors seminar. I keep a copy on my bed stand. It's the best read for opening to random passages on the development of Maxwell's equations, thermodynamics, special relativity, etc. I gave one to my nephew. The blue one is the US edition, the red is full of authentic colour!

I use this book as the last thing I do with my 7th graders. They study the Middle Ages in social studies and this is a great cross-curricular activity. My students are restless and ready to be out of school for the summer at this time of year, but they LOVE this book. Many, many of my reluctant readers tell me every year how much they enjoy this book - even if they have always hated reading.

It's the text book of California Southern University MBA course. The contents are comprehensive.

I bought a used book in Amazon. It was very cheap. A new one is about $130. I bought the used one at about $10. I live in Seoul, South Korea. So overseas parcel service fee was about $30. I paid only $40 for this. Wow, what a deal!

And it took only 4~5 days to deliver it to me from USA to South Korea. How amazing! I felt as if I lived in USA.

The book was used, but it's in great shape. Very good!

Sylvia Main was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. She moved to Canada with her family as a teenager, and received her BA in Languages and Literature from the University of Victoria.

She has lived and travelled in Europe, where she is continuously inspired by the lifestyle and beautiful surroundings. She speaks English, German, Spanish, French and Italian.

Sylvia took her talents to the Fairmont Empress Hotel where she was in Guest Services for a number of years. In 1991, she married Roscoe Main, and the couple opened Fairholme Manor in Victoria's Rockland Estates area in 1999. Over the years, they have lovingly transformed their ugly duckling mansion into a beautifully restored European Inn.

Sylvia and Roscoe have two daughters, Simone and Nicola.

About the Author
Sylvia Main was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. She moved to Canada with her family when she was a teenager and went on to complete her BA in languages and literature at the University of Victoria. Sylvia worked for the elegant Fairmont Empress Hotel in Guest Services for a number of years. In 1999, Sylvia and her husband, Roscoe, opened Fairholme Manor Inn in Victoria. Over the years, the two have transformed the mansion into a beautiful European inn.

Fairholme Manor has gained a worldwide reputation for its memorable breakfasts and brunches since it opened in 1999.

Over the years, we have had numerous requests from guests and friends to create a book filled with our favourite recipes and ideas. As a result, I collaborated with my talented team and produced a cookbook that contains recipes that are both tasty and easy to make. Plus, they have been tested time and again in Fairholme's kitchen, and they really work!

I've always felt that a homemade breakfast or brunch is the ideal way to start a busy day or relaxing weekend. Fresh, quality foods are key ingredients in all our recipes - including organic dairy and meats. We are fortunate to have a bountiful herb and vegetable garden, a wide variety of edible flowers and free range eggs from Maureen our "Egg Lady." So tasty!

As a child growing up in Austria, some of my fondest memories are the trips I made with my family to local farms. There we would get fresh fruits and vegetables, along with farm fresh eggs. I spent many hours in the kitchen with my mother, who introduced me to her flair for entertaining in style.

Although I have no formal training as a chef, I'm passionate about food. With assistance from my talented team of creative cooks, I've gained an invaluable insight into food preparation and presentation. This book is filled with yummy recipes and beautiful photographs of the breakfasts and brunches we serve at Fairholme Manor. They are a reflection of the casual comfort and chic European style of our Inn.

I hope you will be inspired by this book to create some of our tasty breakfasts and brunches in your own home. They are meant to be shared with family and friends.

Using The Recipes in My New B&B

I opened a B&B the end of 9/12 and am making gourmet breakfasts each morning for our guests. I have made numerous recipes from this cookbook and have always been more than pleased with the results and the dishes get rave reviews from my guests. I have probably used 12-15 of the recipes so far. Even if I have never tried a recipe before I'm not afraid to try it on our guests because all the rest of the recipes have been perfect. Normally I would have to try it in advance.

The pancakes, coffee cakes, scones and egg dishes are wonderful. The scrambled egg recipe is the best I've ever had and it's so easy. The creme fraiche and hollandaise sauces are very easy also. I highly recommend this cookbook. The directions are easy and the ingredients common to almost any grocery store so they are easy to obtain.

If you love to cook, you will love this book

Purchased Sylvia's book while staying at Fairholme in 2011.
I fell in love with all of the delicious dishes she created each morning and couldn't wait to try some of the recipes in my kitchen.
One of my favorite dishes is the zucchini frittata, (I use whatever veggie is in season) - I recently made it with asparagus and it was just as delicious. I always have a batch of the Fairholme granola on hand (best granola I have ever tasted). Other favorites are: Fairholme berry muffins, crunchy raspberry/blackberry muffins & zucchini chocolate breakfast cake!

Breakfast Inspiration Awaits!

This book is beautifully photographed with easy to assemble and simple yet elegant meals. It is full of good ideas and wonderful inspiration for everyday breakfasts as well as for when you have house guests or company for brunch. The overall tone and visual appeal of the book made me feel as if I were on a weekend getaway, and definitely imparted the character of the B&B through its pages. Despite the fact that two out of three of the tested recipes fell short, I would still recommend this book as it is a good jumping off point for experimenting with your own ideas. The basics are all there, it just needs some tweaking.
